Hebrews 6:4, 5
Impossible
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, (Hebrews 6:4)
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,(Hebrews 6:5)
Impossible — a word so vast in its dimension; a word with endless possibilities. Impossible to obtain, or impossible to lose, but not impossible to lose something that one never possessed; yet, with God nothing is impossible. For with God nothing shall be impossible. (Luke 1:37)
The Contract
The gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is a contract that God prepared between God the Father, and God the Son with the Holy Spirit being the divine witness. The contract was given by God so that Adam’s fallen race might have a way to redemption. This contract was sealed with a divine pen, and the ink was the divine blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. In all contracts one must verify or examine the conditions. Each condition in the contract must be verified either with evidence in a written form, or a testimony of witnesses to its authenticity. The qualifications of the gospel are both simple and complex. They involve the divine counsels of God, and the power and the will of God, and the gifts of God, for man must receive of the contract before he can agree to its terms. Man stands alone in the complete darkness of his own sin and can only receive light as from the divine source above as given from above. This is what we behold in verse 4 and 5, we have qualifications as a rainbow of blessings after the storm. The blessing of the knowledge of God, and the gift of His Son and Holy Spirit, are to set the heart at ease for now the storm against man is over, and God’s bow is in the sky.
On Adams part, we are children of Adam, we have come from His seed, and we are drawn in to the very moment of his trespass against God. The trespass of Adam has not increased nor decreased in his descendants. That trespass of sin still bears the same penalty, and that is death. When God showers His grace, it is available from the heavens above. There are no restrictions on His divine love, this love must come as a gift from its divine Author. I was once enlightened by the sure word of God and by the Holy Spirit. I was infused with divine light from above, and God created a new creature in His Son Jesus Christ. Christ is the Creator in my second birth. He is also my Possessor, for He has possessed me to be conformed to His own likeness. He has given me a divine nature, and this nature has come by the gift of His divine grace. His promise to me is that He will not leave me nor forsake me. For I have tasted of the heavenly gift, He is my bread of life, and by this bread I have received grace for grace. The witness of God is both sure and steadfast. He has confirmed this with the witness of the Holy Ghost within me. This divine Person assures and guides me through this evil world.
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.(Romans 8:15) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (Romans 8:16) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (Romans 8:17) These verses refer to the tangibles of our salvation. Is not faith a witness of things hoped for? Is not faith the evidence of things not seen? Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.(Hebrews 11:6)
The Evidence Within
In the child of God (who has been endowed with the Spirit of God) there will be a yearning in the heart however feeble to internally glorify the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The outward expression will be viewed as a life lived for Christ. If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15) As we were enlightened, and have tasted of the gifts of God, the gift of the Holy Spirit, we have received a witness of the things hoped for. The evidence of the Holy Ghost working within us to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ is the validation that we have tasted of the bread of life. This bread is the heavenly gift of God’s dear Son, and because Christ has endowed me with His Spirit I can therefore say, Blessed be the name of the Lord. Oh, how good is thy word O Lord, it is sweeter than honey for the soul.
Tasted — Tasted
The word ‘tasted’ is mentioned twice. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, (Hebrews 6:4) And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,(Hebrews 6:5) We taste of the heavenly gift, and we also taste of the good word of God. Do you see the progression: first we partake of the heavenly gift, we taste it, and this gift becomes part of us; then, the gift of the Holy Ghost works within us, and He declares in our soul, Taste and see the good word of God. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. (Psalm 34:8) How wonderful are thy ways, O Lord, for thy ways are past finding out. And Through the word of God we taste of the world to come, for we have been delivered from this present evil world; although not fulfilled at this moment, in the divine context of the gospel we have been given to the world to come: the new heaven and the new earth. Christ is the first fruit of all that will be fulfilled in His bride, the Church, and we are the fruit of His divine love. We are the extension of His will in the world today. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. (James 1:18)
We ARE . . . Chosen In Christ . . . Prepared for the World to Come
We are a chosen generation in Jesus Christ which make up the generation of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 1) We have been chosen in Christ by the most high God. We have been chosen in Christ before the foundations of the world. We have been chosen in Christ for His good pleasure, and we have been chosen in Christ according to God’s sovereign will. And while we dwell on earth as the children of God through the good word of God, He has given us a taste of things to come. The Church, as a whole, has lost sight of the world that we are being prepared for. We ARE the children of the new heaven and the new earth. We ARE the heirs of salvation in Jesus Christ, which makes us the heirs of His righteousness. We have been separated by divine order from sin, for Christ separated us from sin when on His cross. In the new heaven and the new earth there will be no more remembrance of sin, for sin was put out of the way at the cross of Christ. This new place, the new heaven and the new earth, will be a scene of the unspotted garden of God. There will never be another fall, for Adam has been completely judged, and punished, and cast into the lake of fire. This world to come will be enabled by all the divine power and righteousness of God. It will be inhabited by the creatures of His love.
The Last Call of Responsibility: Faith
The word ‘impossible’ is only found in the New Testament, 9 times. Nine (9) is the last single digit. It is the last voice in its line. The final call of responsibility, and that call of responsibility comes in Hebrews 11:6. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. The Holy Spirit magnifies faith in this verse. He emphasizes to us that without faith it is impossible to please God. This statement comes in a chapter that is dominated by faith. Over and over, we see faith and those who exercised faith, and the faith of God is shown to us in Hebrews 11 in sundry times, and diverse manners. Faith is a description as well as a gift of the people, and the servants of God recorded in this Chapter of faith. The word ‘faith’ stretches through time, from Abel to verses 39 and 40 of Hebrews Chapter 11. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: (Hebrews 11:39) God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. (Hebrews 11:40)
Because this Chapter 11 is so intense with the subject of faith, Chapter 12 begins with a great cloud of witnesses referring back to Chapter 11 that has been so well documented by the Spirit of God. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (Hebrews 12:1)
The Unseen Element of Faith: Angels
The gift of faith is the path that leads to the rock and the water of life. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. By the good word of God, however, we are introduced to many things that are unseen and our belief gives tangible witness to these unseen things. For instance, the Lord Jesus Himself, instructed us that every child has an angel. This is a specific ministry given to the angels for children. These children are seen by God through His angels, and this was given by the voice of God (who cannot lie). For Christ spoke of this as documented in Matthew 18:10. And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, (Matthew 18:2) Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:10) These particular angels have a specific ministry to children, and each child has an angel that is before God the Father. Notice in the text the word ‘angels’ is plural. Faith gives us the eye of the unseen. This eye is belief; as we believe the good word of God. These angels are ministering spirits. We have been informed by the good word of God that Gods angels are an innumerable company, and we thank the Lord for this innumerable company of angels. They are the unseen ministers to the whole family of faith. How many have watched us through our baby steps, and our fall; and watched us running the race that is set before us.
Enlightened by the Power of the Divine Light
There is a divine progression in verses 4 and 5 of Hebrews Chapter 6. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, (Hebrews 6:4) And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,(Hebrews 6:5) This progression should be seen in its proper order. One must be first enlightened so that the soul sees its true condition before God. The word ‘enlightened’ is the first step in the work of the Spirit of God. The word ‘enlightened’ takes us back to the words of Christ in the gospel of John, Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12) The Lord Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the power of all divine light. He has the power to give this light to every man, however, faith in Christ becomes the light switch between eternal grace and eternal damnation; His light is in contrast to sin and darkness. His light gives life. Sin gives darkness and death. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. (John 1:4) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.(John 1:5) That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. (John 1:4)
Christ is the Source of Divine Light
The Holy Spirit stated that the Lord is Life, from this life He gives light to the world. His divine life is the source of His divine Light; there can be no light without the presence of His life. The scriptures proclaim this divine Light, and the world rejected His light, as they do today because men love darkness not the light. This is totally revealed in the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ, for they showed (by their actions) that they were under the total power of darkness. The statement of the Spirit of God that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all is the very present condemnation of the present evil world. Scripture proves the division of both light and darkness in Genesis Chapter 1. The light in Genesis 1:3 is not the light of the sun, but the divine light of God. The Scriptures witness through both the Old Testament and New Testament of the divine Light of God. We see this light many times in the Shekinah glory of the Lord which was revealed on the holy mount when the Lord Jesus was transfigured before His disciples. Please understand that this transfiguration was totally supernatural. This is why the disciples were not harmed by the brightness of His glory, as He was supernaturally transfigured they were supernaturally protected. The transfiguration was the revelation to His disciples of the brightness of His glory (called Shekinah glory) which Peter witnessed.
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. (2 Peter 1:16) For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.(2 Peter 1:17) And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. (2 Peter 1:18) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: (2 Peter 1:19)
Peter recalled not only the glory, but the majesty of the Lord Jesus Christ, all taking place on God’s holy mount. In verse 19, when Peter considered the word of God, he stressed We have also a more sure word of prophecy, referring to Old Testament Scriptures. He said of these Scriptures that they are a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts. Giving power and authority to the very word of God. We are enlightened by the Light of Christ. The Lord Jesus told the Jews that they should search the scriptures (meaning the Old Testament) for the Old Testament Scriptures witnessed things concerning the Son of God. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. (John 5:39) The thought here is that Christ is eternal life, not the Scriptures. They (the Scriptures) testify of Christ as eternal life. The Lord Jesus goes on to say that it is He who has the power of life.
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. (John 5:40) I receive not honour from men. (John 5:41) But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. (John 5:42) I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. (John 5:43) How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? (John 5:44) Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. (John 5:45) For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. (John 5:46) But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?(John 5:47)
Christ revealed His light to them. They refused His light so He exposed their darkness. They held to Moses and the prophets, however, their thoughts were perverted by their own darkness. The Lord proclaimed to them For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. They were perverted by their own interpretation of the writings of Moses. They had perverted the truth to continue their own system of darkness. Remember early in John, Chapter 5 verses 16 thru 18, the Jews took up stones and were about to stone the Lord Jesus in verse 17 when He reaffirmed that the very works of the Father were in His hands. The Jews again sought to kill Him, stating that He was making Himself equal with God. The darkness of their hearts was so great that there was no room for divine Light. Light had come into the world, and men loved darkness and not the Light.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. (John 1: 4) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (John 1: 4)
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.(1 John 5:11)
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:4)
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. (John 3:19)
These Scriptures reveal the darkness that the Jews had in their hearts, and these Scriptures also bear witness that life, light, and eternal life come from Jesus Christ our Lord, and Him alone. The light of Christ exposes all darkness. It exposes all evil. It exposes all unbelief.
In the new birth we have been transformed from darkness to light, and in the light (which is Christ) we have received life eternal. The life of Christ in the believer is the eternal witness of God’s Son to the believer, and His life gives light as a continual factor in our growth, and in our devotion, and in our obedience to the Lord. We no longer live in darkness, we live in the light of the Lord Jesus Christ. In His light He teaches us His word, and His will; consequently, the Holy Spirit applies the will of Christ to our hearts. The Holy Spirit gets us through life’s emergencies, life’s experiences, such as, trials, sufferings, chastening, and at times fills us with the overflowing joy in Christ Jesus our Lord. The apostle Paul informed us that we were to bring ALL things into subjection to Christ that the will of God would be accomplished in us. This means if we are comfortable, or uncomfortable the will of God still must be fulfilled in us according to God’s desire. For our life is hid in Christ in God.
The Work of The Holy Spirit
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, (Hebrews 10:19)
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; (Hebrews 10:20)
And having an high priest over the house of God; (Hebrews 10:21)
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.(Hebrews 10:22)
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (Hebrews 10:23)
Christ has made us true worshipers of God. We have in our hearts the love of God, this begins with God, and is verified in us when we from the depths of our hearts can say, without any reservation, Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (Matthew 22:37) This is the tone that grace establishes in the heart of the believer. The throne of grace is open to all the children of God because of our great high Priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Only One Mediator — One Minister — One Blood — One Offering
Is there any other mediator? Is there any other minister of the new covenant? Is there any other blood that can bring us to God? We enter into the Holiest of all, into the very depths of heaven, we are born of the Spirit of God to worship God in the holiest sanctuary of all; and our worship is of the Man Jesus Christ who is the eternal God. Only Aaron could go into the Holy of Holies made by hands, but we can go into the Holy of Holies not made by the hands of man, but by the holy hands of God. When Nadab and Abihu took (each of them) their own censors and put fire (that was not of God) in each of their censors they were trying to present to God a counterfeit offering instead of what God had prescribed. Their intention and the intent of their hearts was to enter in to the Holy of Holies without blood. The result was that God would not receive this counterfeit offering, and the penalty was death: death by fire.
In the new covenant that was sealed by the blood of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus has given to us a new and living way to enter in to the Holy of Holies through His blood which is in heaven. Christ has rent the veil for us, and thus, we can approach God and be in His presence where ever we are. The Son of God has established a relationship with us, and not our surroundings. This relationship is unbreakable and we are in this relationship through His precious blood. Christ as the sacrifice has presented us to the Father, and God the Father looks on us as sons and joint-heirs with Christ. Our position is within the body of Christ, and no one can remove a member from His body. As we commune with God in prayer and mediation, we learn of Him who is the Center and the Object of our life. His love has created in us a love for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Not only do we learn of Him, but He teaches us about ourselves. He reveals those things within us that are good and bad.
A Child Adopted and Waiting
In our growth in the Lord Jesus Christ we continually receive the fruits of our inheritance as a child in waiting. We are waiting for that which is to come. In the world of Adam, inheritance depends on the wealth and possession of the father, and the position of the son. Christ was once offered to bring many sons unto glory. Christ has been appointed heir of all things. Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (Hebrews 1:2) This makes the Lord Jesus the heir of right, it is His right by sonship and that He IS the first born from the dead. This is truly a new thing in the course of time that the Son of God and God the Father have both enabled us to be sons through God’s marvelous and wonderful love.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (1 John 1:1) (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) (1 John 1:2)
We have been brought into a relationship with God by adoption. We were children of Adam. Adam has been removed from us at the cross, therefore, we cease to be a member of his family, consequently, God adopted us through the work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary where Adam, sin, and death were all put out of the way. In a sense we were without a father, for Adam ceased to exist, therefore, God comes in through Jesus Christ and adopts us into the family of God as children and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. This is all the outcome of God’s great love.
God Cannot Change — It is Impossible
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. (Luke 18:27)
For with God nothing shall be impossible. (Luke 1:37)
And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.(Mark 10:27)
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)
The God of Impossibilities
The Lord Jesus in His ministry continually referred to the God of impossibilities, that with God nothing was impossible. As we look on God’s Son, He lived a whole life of impossibilities. He fulfilled all things that were impossible for man to fulfill. The supernatural Man became the man to fulfill the very word ‘impossible.’ These all are an answer to our faith, for the tiniest amount of faith is rewarded by God. (Matthew 17:20) And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. All that is possible in God is impossible for man. The smallest amount of faith is rewarded in an impossible way, for God brings forth a child out of the womb of darkness not by blood, nor the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but by God. Faith in God’s divine Being answers to faith, but nothing can start without the gift of faith from Jesus Christ our Lord. The last mention of ‘impossible’ is found in Hebrews 11:6, the object of faith is God, the movement of faith is belief, and God is pleased by those who diligently seek Him. He takes pleasure in the children of faith that is probably why the Spirit of God takes a complete Chapter and presents it as the annals of faith. He presents to us the very best examples of faith. We have a list of both men and women of faith, each one walked in their own path of faith through this life with God. These answered to the faith that God gave them as a gift from above. I must emphasize once again Hebrews 11:6, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Some might see a paradox in verse 6, without faith is the negative, as without God; however, faith from above has no connection to Adam or the earth. It is given divinely by God, and faith draws us to believe in Him. We were dead in trespasses and sin, we were without faith, and sin had brought forth death in us. If we are to have life, it must come from without, it must come from someone capable of giving true life, and that is God; and that life must come through faith. Adam could never bestow faith on another, in fact, any man who has been born of a woman could never bestow faith on another. I could not instill faith in myself or in my being; it has to come from without, it has to come from God. Tell me, Could man find another man on earth to redeem us? Could God out of the children of Adam find a man on earth to redeem us? No. He had to send to us a supernatural Man in His Son, Jesus Christ. He was the only one who could do the impossible for mankind. For with God nothing is impossible.
The Goodness of God
Man in all his looking and searching, in all his desires to find God in His own way, when God stood before him what did man do? They crucified the Prince of Life. Do you see the depth of man’s darkness? Man stood before the Light, but would not surrender his darkness. His reason was to cast the Light out of the world for there was no good thing in man. Every man and woman of faith listed in Hebrews Chapter 11 was given faith from above. Abraham was called out of Ur of Chaldees, he did not volunteer, God called him and God gave Abraham faith to follow God and to fulfill God’s will for his life. Man in Adam is completely cut off from God. He was driven out of the presence of God, and in his sinful state he could not, and would not seek God; proving that there is no good thing in man, no not one.
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (Romans 3:10) There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.(Romans 3:11) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (Romans 3:12)
In considering that mankind has nothing to offer God, God in return has everything to offer man. Out of the goodness of God He has sent the only One who could be called good, and that is Christ. He, as God, is the fullness of God’s love. And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. (Mark 10:18) And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. (Luke 18:19) Here the goodness of God proclaims His own goodness as God. This goodness mankind cannot possess unless faith has brought forth birth, and one is born of God, and has received the fullness of God’s goodness in Jesus Christ. Adam could not know the fullness of God’s goodness after the fall. As he was driven from the presence of God he was also denied (because of his sin) the goodness of God.
In our current world, man has developed his own standard of goodness. He believes that his goodness is as good as the goodness of God. Man does not understand that he is a being that is cut off from God’s goodness. He searches for more goodness, and only finds what he determines to be the goodness of man. If you were to ask the Pharisees, the Sadducees, or the rulers of the Jews, If they were good? They would have answered, Of course, yes! Their goodness was based on themselves, and not on God. For had they examined themselves in light of God’s goodness they would not have crucified the Lord Jesus Christ. In their actions they refused God’s goodness. God’s goodness can only be expressed in the believer by the indwelling Spirit of Christ.
Taste and See
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, (Hebrews 6:4) And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, (Hebrews 6:5) In the two verses that we are considering, the word ‘tasted’ is mentioned twice. We are to taste of the heavenly gift. (Ephesians 2:8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:. After tasting the heavenly gift, you can say in your heart that, you want to proclaim to others, Taste and see for the Lord is good.
In the event of the incident of Jonathan that after he had been deprived of food and he found some honey and ate the honey; his eyes were enlightened. (1 Samuel 14:27) The honey had produced within him a sight and energy he did not have before. The Lord’s death has brought life and honey to the redeemed. Samson’s riddle has a divine conclusion in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Judges 14) Life has come out of death, and as the sweetness of honey, it is the gift of God. God has given this gift and He will not repent or change His mind according to His determinate counsels.
The Road Signs to Faith
Although we do not see these roads signs when the Spirit of God is prodding our heart before salvation, He is bringing us to a state of conviction, then a state of need, then He presents a path, a road sign, the road sign is faith. As we take the road of faith it leads us to grace, and grace leads us to the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Taste this gift from above, the perfect gift of God sent down from heaven to redeem man. Taste and see the Lord is good, taste the good word of God, both the Living word and the written word.
In the course of my early days, post salvation, God provided two men who were not of the normal course of the ecclesia. Both of these men taught me with the Spirit of God to taste everything by the word of God. In these two verses, the word ‘taste’ is used twice as the divine importance of both the gift from heaven, and the witness of God through the good word of God.
The Spirit’s Voice Within and The Good Word of God Without
We should always listen to the Spirit’s voice within us. The gift of grace came from above, it is a divine gift, and is always accompanied with the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who teaches us to taste everything by the good word of God. For those who like particulars the phrase ‘the good word of God’ is only mentioned one time in the entire Bible — verse 5 of Hebrews Chapter 6. Everything in the Christians’ life is directed by the Holy Spirit and the good word of God. The Holy Spirit is the only authority within the child of God. The good word of God is the only authority for the child of God. One is within, the other is without. These two authorities are the only ones that God will approve in your life. It is the good word of God because it has been breathed by God. Each word has been formed by God’s breath.
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (Psalm 119:18)
How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalm 119:103)
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. (Psalm 119:130)
The Word
The value of the word of God (contrary to belief) is not set by man, but by God Himself. So much so that He proclaims Himself and titles His Being as the Word of God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. (Revelation 19:13)
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.(1 John 5:7)
To the believer on earth the Word of God that the believer sees is his total wealth of heaven, and it is the promise of a divine eternity with God. The Word of God is God’s mind to the believer. God sets each of our courses by the Spirit of God and by the word of God according to His divine will for us. The Holy Spirit directs us by the word of God; these verses before us are full of God’s direction. Remember, Chapter 5:14, that Chapter ended with discerning between good and evil. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil, and that was according to the word of God.
When someone tells you that you have no right to judge, and you have judged the situation or object by the word of God, then just tell them, Thus saith the Lord, Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. (John 7:24) Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? (Luke 12:57) And if that is not good enough for them when you show them God’s displeasure of the situation or object by the word of God remind them that the Holy Spirit within you has been sent into the world by the Lord Jesus Christ to judge, to rebuke, reprove, and to condemn the world around us. The authority to judge good and evil comes from God through the Holy Spirit and through the word of God. And if the world can’t handle that then they need to respond to the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (2 Timothy 4:2) These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. (Titus 2:15)
We Have The Good Word of God
Paul, John and Peter stated to us that we are in the last days, who cannot forget the statement, The night is far spent, the day is at hand. This is one of the wonderful hopes that God has given us, that we wait for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ when He will remove His church from the earth, and we will go home to the glory of heaven. But in the last days there will be many evils, there will be the evil heart of man; man will do everything he can to discredit the word of God, and the true followers of that Word. When God tells us that we have the good word of God in our hands, it is to relate His mind, His feelings to us. It is not what man writes, or what even this man writes, it is the revealing of the Holy Spirit of God taking the word of God and revealing it to your heart, to your soul, to your spirit. In the present evil world God has given us a divine river to drink from. This river is so pure that it is called the good word of God.
There are men of reprobate minds, devious men, deceptive men, false prophets, and false teachers all trying to lead YOU away from the good word of God. As we mentioned, the word ‘tasted’ repeats in these two verses; there is a reason — for we taste the good gift of God, and we taste the good word of God. When we stand with the word of God the evils of Jude 4, 2 Peter 2:1-3, and Galatians 2:4, will be exposed. The Spirit of God will open your eyes to things that you did not see. He will lead you on a path that you did not behold before.
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:4)
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.(2 Peter 2:1) And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. (2 Peter 2:2) And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. (2 Peter 2:3)
And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: (Galatians 2:4)
We should realize that in the present evil world we are surrounded by the representatives of Satan. Their total desire is to deceive, and if it WERE possible they would deceive the very elect. The Lord Jesus testified that the days will be shortened, for if they were not shortened the evil would deceive all, and God will not allow this.
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) (2 Corinthians 10:4) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Our weapons are not carnal, nor are they of the world. Just as there is supernatural power in the Living Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, so there is power in the written word of God, divinely ministered by the supernatural power of the Spirit of God. Notice the word ‘supernatural’ the supernatural power of God trumps all evil. This is the divine formula by the good word of God. The good word of God is for every child of God. It is to give us a sound mind, and a strong heart, and a fervent spirit in the Lord Jesus Christ. This all comes from taking heed to the good word of God. Remember Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The word of God is a discerner, it discern’s our thoughts and the intent or intentions of our hearts. Intentions comes before any actions. This is the place that you take the good word of God. Before you take a step in the path of life, you try the intent of your heart by the good word of God. Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little, there a little, and the good word of God will lead you to the world to come. And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,(Hebrews 6:5)
The Bridge Between Two Realms
We need to see the good word of God as a bridge to the new heaven and the new earth. This will be our final state, this will be our final estate, we will dwell with the Person of God throughout His wonderful eternity. The Holy Spirit has not given us much information about this wonderful place when the old heaven and the old earth will be taken away (for this too should be by faith). The elements will melt with fervent heat, and then like ourselves (as a new creation), God will create a new heaven and a new earth. We can’t see the landscape, we can only refer to the garden of God. The rivers were pure, the trees were untarnished, the fruit was the sweetness of God, and most of all God was in the midst of the garden.
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but the good word of God endureth forever. So we see this bridge in the good word of God where the Living Word and the written word will meet together in holiness and righteousness. I would think that since God has a written record in heaven, there will be an extended written record of God’s determinate counsel in the new heaven and the new earth. Even though we understand (as Christians) that Christ is our Temple, that He is the Light of our life, that He is our Creator and God, think what the revelation will be when we enter into the new heaven and the new earth. What glory our eyes will see, what majesty we will behold, and what is so wonderful that He who is wonderful (and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace) will be with us, and we will be with Him for all eternity.
What We Will Understand Later
We will understand in a divine way the divine mind of God. We will understand fully the determinate counsels of God. And we will understand each and every word in the good word of God. The good word of God is a path to follow, a light to shine in the darkness, a rest for the weary beside the still waters of faith. The good word of God reveals the greatest love that mankind has ever known. And those who have held this love in their hearts will enjoy that love throughout all eternity. The good word of God reveals the Creator, and all things that He has created. The good word of God reveals His divine power, and His divine holiness and righteousness which makes up His very Being. The good word of God and the world to come can be seen in:
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.(2 Peter 3:10)
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,(2 Peter 3:11)
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?(2 Peter 3:12)
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.(2 Peter 3:13)
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.(2 Peter 3:14)
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; (2 Peter 3:15)
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. (2 Peter 3:16)
For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. (Isaiah 65:17)
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. (Revelation 21:1)
Our Present State and Our Great Hope
As we contemplate the new heaven and the new earth, we also must be completely aware of our present state on earth. We live in a world that is filled with evil, and by the divine work of the Holy Spirit in our new birth we have been set apart by God as His ambassadors to this world. We are here to not only proclaim the word of God, but we are here to judge evil, to rebuke, and judge what opposes a holy and righteousness God. Before the creation of the new heaven and the new earth, we should see the sequence of events; we should consider the translation of the Church, that the Lord Jesus will descend, and we will be caught up to meet Him in the air. He will change our vile bodies into His glorious body, we will be conformed to His image. Paul gave us this testimony in 1 Corinthians 15:51-55.
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, (1 Corinthians 15:51)
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1 Corinthians 15:52)
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. (1 Corinthians 15:53)
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. (1 Corinthians 15:54)
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? (1 Corinthians 15:55)
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. (1 Corinthians 15:56)
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:58)
This wonderful hope should always be with us, for any moment in these last days, God can enact His divine call to His Church to come up hither. Paul gave us the witness of the Holy Spirit who has revealed this truth to the children of God. The written word, or good word of God, reveals the truth and the Spirit of God puts that truth in our hearts, souls, and spirit. Paul continued this wonderful truth to the Thessalonians.
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (1 Thessalonians 4:13)
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. (1 Thessalonians 4:14)
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. (1 Thessalonians 4:15)
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:(1 Thessalonians 4:16)
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:18)
The Journey Before Us
Our souls should rejoice in this grand truth, for this wonderful day WILL come, the Lord Jesus WILL call His beloved out of the grave. They will ascend up to be with the Lord, and we who are alive will be caught up with them, and this is the wonderful truth: that we shall be with the Lord forever. The entire body of Christ will be in their glorified bodies, and they will be caught up to heaven, but this is not the end of our journey! We will be a bride-in-waiting, for you see that at the end of the history of mankind there will be a great marriage: the marriage of the Lamb.
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.(Revelation 19:6)
Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.(Revelation 19:7)
And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. (Revelation 19:8)
And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. (Revelation 19:9)
The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, (Matthew 22:2)
And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.(John 2:2)
The Greatest Love Story – Conceived – Lived – and Consummated
In the course of events: this marriage takes place, the bride has been waiting for her Beloved. He is presented to her, and this glorious marriage is brought to pass. These Scriptures that I have given you are just a few for our contemplation. So vast is God’s love affair with the Church that He gave His beloved Son for her. This love affair with the Church is so marvelous that He took one whole book in the Bible to describe the emotions, the feelings, and the desire of the heart, soul and spirit for the Person of the Son of God. This book is the Song of Songs. There is no head knowledge here, this is a book of the feelings of the heart, and the desires of the heart for a love that man cannot explain or know outside of having the divine Spirit of God within. The Spirit of God (since the conception of the Church) has been drawing the bride slowly through history, and it will be the Spirit of God who delivers the bride to the Bridegroom. The heart of the bride is not drawn to the glory of the throne, nor to the glory of the Temple, nor the glory of the city, she is drawn to the glory of the Man Jesus Christ.
The Greatest Love Song: About the Greatest Love and the Greatest Marriage
This is a song for the heart. This is the song that answers all the whys, there is no question left unsettled for the bride. She begins seeking, and then at the end she rests in His bosom. All the mysteries, all the shadows of His love are slowly revealed through these chapters of love. And like the bride in the final verse of this wonderful Song of Songs, our hearts joins with her heart, and we proclaim, Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices. (Song of Songs 8:14) There is more to this wonderful marriage, as we are being drawn to Him in love, He has already been drawn to us in the fullness of His marvelous love. In His heart there is never a doubt of His love for us. It is only the bride who wanders, and doubts, but never the Bridegroom for He has chosen her before the foundation of the earth. Her name, or names, have been written in the marriage agreement, every heart who has been born anew has desired His appearing, Make haste, my beloved.
A small section in John Chapter 2 deals with the marriage on the third day in Cana of Galilee, we miss these few words, Jesus was called. We read (John 2:2) And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. As we have been called for this wonderful marriage, so the Lord Jesus was also called in that determinate counsels of God. In eternity God the Father called His Son, and in the divine counsels He betrothed a wonderful gift to His Son, this would be the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the cry that we receive when mediating on the Song of Songs:, we (the bride) lie in our bed yearning for Him, we walk through the fields calling for Him, desiring our Beloved waiting for Him to receive us and take us away. He is the first and only love, and this love burns deep in her heart and soul. She asks herself, Why does He tarry? And then, we have the answer from the Lord, I go to prepare a place for you. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.(John 14:2) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:3)
In the Song of Songs, the bride is not concerned about the mansions, she’s not concerned about the kings riches, she only wants Him, and no one or thing will do, only He can meet all her desires. We should see the Spirit of God, not only as God the Holy Spirit, but as a servant who has been sent by God the Father and God the Son to call a bride out of the world: as Eliezer, the servant of Abraham was sent into Mesopotamia to find a bride for Isaac. The Holy Spirit has been drawing a bride from the world for God’s dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. When God is ready then Christ will descend in the air, and the work of the Holy Spirit will join His love to Himself. Then at the marriage the Lord of glory will take His bride arrayed in her garments (so white) into His tent, and He will adorned her with His love; and she will adore Him in her heart felt love.
Kings’ daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. (Psalm 45:9)
The king’s daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold.(Psalm 45:13) She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. (Psalm 45:14) With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king’s palace. (Psalm 45:15)
What would we miss if we did not have the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the good word of God. We would miss all this splendor, all this awesomeness. Both the Holy Spirit and the good word of God exalting the Son of God, both proclaiming His divine love for us, both leading us through this world and keeping us in the very love of God. What would we miss without these two witnesses of the great love that God the Father and Jesus Christ has for us, His bride, His redeemed. I would like to write more about the world to come, but this is not up to me, that window has not been opened yet, so it must come later. When God opens that window and has prepared my heart, then we will pass through that window, and our eyes will see more of the world to come. At this time, we must close, but through faith we will wait until God opens that window for it is He who opens and no man can shut, and no man can shut divine revelation, but for now, I must simply say, Good night and God bless. Amen.
The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills. (Song of Songs 2:8) My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.(Song of Songs 2:9) My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. (Song of Songs 2:10)
Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee. (Song of Songs 4:7)
