In the beginning was The Word
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
As we move through the gospels from Matthew to Mark and to Luke we get the sense of earthly communications. Matthew is the ministry of the kingdom; that is, that Christ will reign and sit upon His throne in Jerusalem with all His earthly glory. If we compare this first gospel with Revelation 4:7 we see . . .
the first beast was like a lion.
And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. (Revelation 4:6)
And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. (Revelation 4:7)
Christ was the lion out of the tribe of Judah; thus, the first beast in Revelation 4:7 is emblematic of the ministry of Christ as brought out in the Gospel of Matthew — the King. When Pilate asked Him the question, if He was a king, the only answer the Lord Jesus gave was, ‘to this end was I born.’
and the second beast like a calf
Then we move on to the Gospel of Mark, we see the true servant of Jehovah. He is greater than Moses, He is greater than Elijah, He is greater than Daniel, and He is greater than all the prophets. He stands alone as the true servant, the faithful servant, and the sacrificial servant. Once again, we return to Revelation 4;7, and the second beast like a calf; not only the beast of burden, but the beast of sacrifice in the burnt offering.
and the third beast had a face as a man Â
Then we come to the Gospel of Luke, we see the Lord Jesus conceived of the Holy Ghost, and born of a virgin to fulfill the prophecy given to Eve that her seed a man-child would be the Redeemer of the world. And this was to be the man, Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world. In Revelation 4:7, the third face is the face of a man; all three of these faces have been of the earth.
and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle
The last face that the Holy Spirit gives us is the face of a flying eagle. The Holy Ghost takes us to the heavenlies as we look down from above at the Son of the Father’s love in the Gospel according to John. The fourth gospel is the Father’s view of His Son. He traces every footstep of His beloved, and divinely informs us, that no man has seen God at any time, No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (John 1:18)
In the beginning was the Word
This is not the beginning of God, but the beginning of the plan of all creation, for God has no beginning nor ending. Creation is spoken into existence from eternity, and you can’t get to eternity through space travel. No matter how man tries there is only one way to see the glory of God, and that is through the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Genesis 1:1, we have the Living Word speaking the word of His power. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; (Hebrews 1:3) He created the heaven and the earth. First the heaven, only one — not the heavens. This is not the realm of the stars and the planets. This is the realm of the throne of God and the holy angels. This is the dwelling place of all the redeemed, and this part of creation came first by the word of His power. It is the unseen part of creation. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) These are the things not seen; yet, every day, every hour, minute and second the eyes of the Creator go to and fro throughout the whole earth. With the word of His power, when the heaven was fashioned, He turned His attention to the eternal blueprint, and created the earth and the lower heavens. He spoke the worlds into existence. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 1:3) By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. (Psalm 33:6) By the word of His power, Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is the Living Word (Hebrews 1:3) called out of eternity and the celestial heavens and the earth came forth. The determinate counsels of God devising a master plan: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This was the eternal blueprint in the mind and Being of God that would burst forth by the word of His power. And from the Son went forth the Word, and out of a complete nothingness came forth heaven and earth. Not even a vacuum, but complete nothingness. Can I write such things? From what authority? From God’s Holy and incorruptible Word, this to warm your souls, the Holy Spirit gives us Colossians 1:13-17.
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: (Colossians 1:13)
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (Colossians 1:14)
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: (Colossians 1:15)
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (Colossians 1:16)
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Colossians 1:17)
From Colossians Chapter 1 we receive from the Holy Ghost that the Son of God, our Savior, has created the heaven and earth. For by Him were all things created. Those things that are in heaven and in heavenly places, those things that are of the earth, those things that are of space, those things that are controlled by time; He has created both the visible realm, and the invisible realm. And then we have another realm, in which all the wisdom of this world cannot understand. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Colossians 1:17) The Lord Jesus is before all things, and by Him all things consist in all creation nothing moves, nothing grows, nothing comes into existence whether visible or invisible — all creation belongs to Him, and for Him, and by Him.
All thrones and kingdoms of men, dominions, and dimensions, principalities, whether seen or unseen, all powers are under His will and the word of His power. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; (Colossians 1:19) The pleasure of the Father is in the fullness of the Son, for the Son fills all in all. All He is bears the title ‘Beloved Son,’ or ‘Son of His love;’ that all the fullness of creation and beyond should dwell in Jesus Christ. How wonderful that our Reconciler is very God who is the Son of His love. All things are reconciled by the blood of His cross. Not only on earth, but far beyond to the heavens of heavens. The things not seen by the eye of man. Truly the half has not been told. All the books of man whether spiritual or intellectual, all the books of time if they were all dedicated to show forth the glory of the Son of God could not answer the eternal question, ‘What think ye of Christ?’
We write trying to reveal the Son of God to man knowing that the Holy Spirit must do His work in the heart of man to bring the Living Word of God to birth in the new creation. Every child of God has been spoken into existence by the Word, and by the word of His power; that some may be reconciled to God. Even the mystery of Colossians 1:26, 27. . . . .
Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: (Colossians 1:26)
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: (Colossians 1:27)
We are so blessed in our day to have a book given of God from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 we have the inseparable and unconquerable word of God given by Jesus Christ by the Spirit of Christ so that we can behold the complete revelation of God to man: a supernatural book that contains everything man is required to know about God. But God does not leave us there — it is also a supernatural book to reveal the heart of man, and to teach us about ourselves. This all from a supernatural Being who bears the title, ‘The Word of God.’ And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. (Revelation 19:13)
We have a way to travel before the world will see the Living Word; yet He is in touch with the world each and every day, each and every hour, each and every minute; nothing is out of His sight or hearing, or presence. All that man is — is known unto Him. They who have been born of God dwell with God every day looking into the book of life and the glory of their Savior, Jesus Christ. (See Message John 17)
Let’s see what is in the word that is from the beginning. Let us compare Romans 11:33-36 with our title text.
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! (Romans 11:33)
For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? (Romans 11:34)
Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? (Romans 11:35)
For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. (Romans 11:36) Only through the wisdom and knowledge in the word of God can we know God.
There is no way to know the mind of God. The only way we can know the knowledge of God is for God to reveal that knowledge unto us in a spoken or written word. When did He speak to us? In the word of God. We have the exact words of Jesus Christ, who is the Word of God. The gospels are full of His teachings, and precepts. If we did not have the written word of God we could not understand, or we could not seek the mind of God and His wisdom. Only through the wisdom and knowledge in the word of God can we know God. And still, many of His ways and judgments are past finding out. We lack the divine intelligence to know all, for we are not deity, but saved by Deity. We, as all men, are God’s creation; and why should the clay tell the potter, ‘Why has Thou made me thus?’
Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? (Romans 9:20)
Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? (Romans 9:21)
What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: (Romans 9:22)
And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, (Romans 9:23)
How can man reply to God, or discuss with God any reason for his existence or creation? Man wants to be independent from God; therefore, in his attitude of heart he replies against God. I give you one example, the general community of science (that is not all scientists) deny that He is God, and deny His ways; yet they are but clay. O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane [and] vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: (1 Timothy 6:20) Look how long they have been arguing over creation. It only took God one chapter and 31 verses to address creation, and yet their books, and their reasoning go on and on in the delusion that they think that they can reply against God. If they were deity and creator, would it not be to their advantage to write a supernatural book to reveal whatever they created, that they were the god of creation, and not only the god of creation, but the redeemer of man. Science could never come out with a plan of creation, and if it were up to them to redeem man — man would be without hope in this world and without God.
Genesis Chapter 1 shows us the God of creation, that He is the Creator. He has revealed Himself so that our eyes and our hearts would be on Him and not on the creation. The creation was already revealed and known to man before Moses was given the words by God — ‘in the beginning.’ God gave the Book of Genesis to explain Himself and who He is. All the seeds of the Bible are in this one book and travel throughout the entire cannon of Scripture to reveal the God of creation and simplify the way He created the heaven and the earth. But, unlike God, man looks under every rock, looking for a mistake, or contriving one when there is none. God changes not. I challenge science ‘falsely so called,’ to seek the wisdom of God for their reasoning and knowledge. And I demand that they do this prayerfully — for if they would — with a contrite heart they would see the God of creation in everything that they do. All the answers would come, for faith would bring forth the knowledge of God, and with that knowledge they would know the Creator, and the creation would be secondary to Him. Tell me, ‘What power gives life and takes that same life, or what power changes a worm into a butterfly of untold beauty, (everyone different, yet same in beauty).’ Tell me ‘Why the waves of the sea don’t engulf the land, who has set their boundaries, and who can release them, who has the winds in His fists, and who lights and darkens the sky, who gives light to the moon, and who holds the sun at bay, why do the clouds change while you are watching them, why is one finger longer than the others?’ Come on — write a book, give all your reasons, then listen to the still small voice of God.
‘In the beginning God.’
Amen.
